ABSTRACT: The current research was designed to determine whether shivering impacts the precooling response during an acute bout of endurance exercise. The variables examined were core body temperature (Tc), 3200 m run time, heart rate (HR) , ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) , blood lactate, and thermal sensation scale (TSS). Subjects consisted of eight trained males ranging in age from 18 to 28 years with a V02peak ranging from 49.40 ml'kg-1'min-1 to 77.90 ml'kg-1'min- 1 Data were collected during three testing session, including a control (C), a precooling (PC), and a precooling without shivering (NS) condition. Blood lactate, Tc, HR, RPE, and TSS were analyzed using a 3 x 4 factorial repeated measures ANOVA. Run time was analyzed using a 3 x 2 factorial repeated measure ANOVA. No significant differences (p > .05) were observed for run time, Tc, HR, RPE, and blood lactate between the three conditions. Mean TSS values in the NS condition (M = 4.08 ± .21) were significantly lower than mean thermal sensation values in the PC (M = 4.53 ± .12) and C (M = 4.59 ± .15) conditions. The shivering response associated with wearing an ice-vest as a precooling technique had no impact on performance variables; however, there was a reduction in TSS.
